The Robert Crown Center invites parents, teens, teachers and community members to it’s free open house Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Events scheduled for the open house include free mini-presentations from professional health educations on combating the abuse of substances like tobacco, alcohol, prescription pain pills and heroin. The event is family friendly and all are welcome to stop in.
The open house will also feature an art installation entitled, “In My Shoes,” created by teens in recovery from Rosecrance, a substance abuse treatment organizaiton with facilities around Rockford and Chicago.The art exhibit is accompanied by Shoe Story submissions from student artists from Park Junior High, Highlands Middle School, and Westmont Junior High.
Hidden in Plain Sight, an interactive installation by LEAD, will feature a mock teenage bedroom that contains over 100 items that indicate a child at risk. Another presentation, 3-Point Advantage, will focus on health risks for athletes, sponsored by the American Medical Association. This presentation addresses injury and pain management, as well as facts and the risks of the abuse of prescription pain medication. Finally, a video screening room will feature cutting edge documentaries for and by teens about substance abuse prevention.
